Macbeth with Colorado Opera
In Verdi’s Macbeth, whispers become prophecy, and ambition is fueled by the stories we choose to believe. This haunting production set in 11th-century Scotland asks what happens when rumor turns into power—and how our voices help shape the rise and fall of leaders.

Scheherazade
Our Centennial Season begins with pieces of rich lyricism, fairy-tale wonders, and a virtuosic composition from our very first composer-in-residence, Eunike Tanzil. Hear the orchestra build from a whisper to a roar in Tanzil’s one-movement Ascending Creatures, inspired by a flock of birds in flight. Then, Beethoven’s poetically quiet Piano Concerto No. 4 that highlights enchanting exchanges between soloist Jean-Baptiste Doulect and the orchestra. Lastly, Rimsky-Korsakov’s legendary Scheherazade presents a gripping symphonic battle of wits, stormy seas, and fairy talks where a brave queen fights for her life using the power of storytelling. An interactive session for makers and thinkers to collaborate, connect, and spark new ideas.

Beethoven Septet with the Rossini Club
Although Beethoven’s Septet, Op. 20 proved to be one of the composer’s most popular and enduring works during his lifetime — much to his chagrin — the effortlessly charming qualities of the work shine through to this day. The piece is written in the form of a grand divertissement, a large scale work of about an hour in length that was fashionable amongst the aristocracy well into the nineteenth century, and includes such works as Mozart’s Gran Partita and Schubert’s Octet. Clarinetist and composer Jörg Widmann’s Oktett nods to both Schubert’s Octet and Beethoven’s Septet through biting parody and earnest homage. The work, cast in early Romantic forms such as the Minuet and a Song without Words, belies its seeming naïveté with its thoroughly contemporary voice that nonetheless remains deeply referential.
